FIRE UNDER THE SNOW

3 stars ***

Documentary about a long-imprisoned Tibetan monk. At the Village East (1:20). NR: Mature themes. In Tibetan with subtitles.

Be warned: The opening ceremonies for the 2008 Olympics might look a little different if you see Makoto Sasa's disturbing documentary beforehand. Sasa's subject is Palden Gyatso, a Tibetan Buddhist monk who was arrested by the Chinese government and tortured for more than three decades. His crime was making an impassioned objection to the invasion of his country. Despite an unsuccessful hunger strike opposing Beijing as site of this year's games, Palden hasn't lost hope that someone is listening. "If the world learns about it," he says of Tibet's occupation, "they'll demand an end to this injustice." - Elizabeth Weitzman
